HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to commend the John Howard Association
4(JHA) on 125 years of dedicated service; and
 
5    WHEREAS, JHA was founded as the Central Howard Association
6in Chicago on December 10, 1901, and the organization adopted
7the name John Howard Association in 1946; and
 
8    WHEREAS, JHA is the only organization in Illinois that
9provides independent, citizen-led correctional oversight, an
10essential function for increasing transparency, understanding
11the realities of the prison system, and advancing meaningful
12reform; and
 
13    WHEREAS, JHA is committed to upholding the dignity and
14humanity of people incarcerated in Illinois, and the
15association is grounded in the belief that every individual
16deserves respect regardless of legal status or personal
17characteristics; and
 
18    WHEREAS, JHA recognizes that the lived experiences of
19incarcerated individuals and correctional staff are vital to
20shaping effective and informed policy; and

1    WHEREAS, Through JHA's direct observation and
2documentation of conditions inside Illinois prisons, the
3organization identifies issues and information that might
4otherwise remain unseen, strengthening accountability and
5guiding advocacy efforts; and
 
6    WHEREAS, JHA remains dedicated to the vision of a
7correctional system that is equitable, reduces harm, and
8honors the humanity of all people; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
10HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11we commend and congratulate the John Howard Association (JHA)
12on 125 years of service, and we express gratitude for the
13association's steadfast work on behalf of incarcerated
14individuals, their families and support networks, and
15communities throughout Illinois.
