| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Pui Yip | ||||||
| 4 | Chiu of Chicago, who passed away on May 26, 2026; and | ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Pui Yip Chiu, born on November 17, 1954, was a | ||||||
| 6 | successful Chinese American business leader in Chicago and a | ||||||
| 7 | role model for Asian immigrants; and | ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Pui Yip Chiu founded the first Chinese bakery in | ||||||
| 9 | Chicago, Chiu Quon Bakery, in 1986; through decades of | ||||||
| 10 | dedicated and honest business operations, his bakery expanded | ||||||
| 11 | throughout Chicago's Chinatown and surrounding communities, | ||||||
| 12 | becoming one of the most recognized and beloved businesses in | ||||||
| 13 | the Chinese community; and | ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, Pui Yip Chiu, beyond the bakery industry, | ||||||
| 15 | achieved remarkable success through his jewelry business, Hang | ||||||
| 16 | Seng Jewelry, and in restaurant, retail gift, real estate, and | ||||||
| 17 | financial businesses, becoming one of the most respected and | ||||||
| 18 | accomplished Chinese American business leaders in Chicago; and | ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, Pui Yip Chiu remained deeply committed to | ||||||
| 20 | community service and charitable causes, and he actively | ||||||
| 21 | supported cultural, educational, and civic organizations | ||||||

| 1 | within the Chinese community; he was widely respected | ||||||
| 2 | throughout Chinatown and was named an Outstanding Asian | ||||||
| 3 | Community Service Award recipient; and | ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, Pui Yip Chiu, as an esteemed member of the Hoy Yin | ||||||
| 5 | community, also served as president of the Hoy Yin Association | ||||||
| 6 | of Chicago during the 2017-2018 term, dedicating himself to | ||||||
| 7 | strengthening and supporting the community; and | ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Pui Yip Chiu was a beloved husband, a loving | ||||||
| 9 | father, and a cherished grandfather who will be remembered for | ||||||
| 10 | his many years of leadership, generosity, and commitment to | ||||||
| 11 | Chicago's Chinese community; and | ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Pui Yip Chiu was the husband of Shui Ling Cheung, | ||||||
| 13 | the father of Joyce (William Chan) Chiu and Matthew (Jia Mei | ||||||
| 14 | Tan Chiu) Chiu, and the grandfather of Lucas, Lorelai, and | ||||||
| 15 | Caiden; therefore, be it | ||||||
| 16 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 17 | HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 18 | we mourn the passing of Pui Yip Chiu and extend our sincere | ||||||
| 19 | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
| 20 | him; and be it further | ||||||
| 21 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
