| 1 | AMENDMENT TO SENATE BILL 2270 | ||||||
| 2 | AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend Senate Bill 2270 by replacing | ||||||
| 3 | everything after the enacting clause with the following: | ||||||
| 4 | "Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section | ||||||
| 5 | Section 27-550 as follows: | ||||||
| 6 | (105 ILCS 5/27-550 new) | ||||||
| 7 | Sec. 27-550. Latinx studies. | ||||||
| 8 | (a) Beginning with the 2027-2028 school year, every public | ||||||
| 9 | elementary school and high school shall include the study of | ||||||
| 10 | Latinx communities in the curriculum across all content areas, | ||||||
| 11 | to be rooted in several key factors, including historical | ||||||
| 12 | factors, cross-cultural awareness, cultural representation, | ||||||
| 13 | and the promotion of social equity. The instruction shall | ||||||
| 14 | include the contributions made by individual Latinx | ||||||
| 15 | communities in government and in the arts, humanities, | ||||||
| 16 | mathematics, and sciences, as well as the contributions of | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | Latinx to the economic, cultural, social, and political | ||||||
| 2 | development of the United States. The studying of this | ||||||
| 3 | material shall constitute an affirmation by students of their | ||||||
| 4 | commitment to respect the dignity of all races and peoples and | ||||||
| 5 | to forever eschew every form of discrimination in their lives | ||||||
| 6 | and careers. | ||||||
| 7 | (b) The State Superintendent of Education may prepare and | ||||||
| 8 | make available to all school boards instructional materials, | ||||||
| 9 | including those established by the Public Broadcasting | ||||||
| 10 | Service, that may be used as guidelines for development of a | ||||||
| 11 | unit of instruction under this Section. However, each school | ||||||
| 12 | board shall itself determine the minimum amount of | ||||||
| 13 | instructional time that qualifies as a unit of instruction | ||||||
| 14 | satisfying the requirements of this Section. | ||||||
| 15 | (c) A regional superintendent of schools shall monitor a | ||||||
| 16 | school district's compliance with this Section's curricular | ||||||
| 17 | requirements during his or her annual compliance visit. | ||||||
| 18 | (d) A school may meet the requirements of this Section | ||||||
| 19 | through an online program or course.". | ||||||
