SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
20 ILCS 2905/5

    Amends the State Fire Marshal Act. Provides that all fire departments and units of local government that provide fire protection services in the State shall report the death of any firefighter employed by the fire department or unit of local government to the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Specifies the information that shall be reported to the Office. Provides that the Office shall publish an annual report concerning the information reported and shall make the report available to the public. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning State government.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The State Fire Marshal Act is amended by
5changing Section 5 as follows:

9    Sec. 5. Tracking firefighter mortality. Beginning no later
10than 6 months after January 1, 2026 (the effective date of
11Public Act 104-102) this amendatory Act of the 104th General
12Assembly, all fire departments and units of local government
13that provide fire protection services in this State shall
14report the death of any firefighter employed by the fire
15department or unit of local government to the Office of the
16State Fire Marshal. The information reported to the Office
17shall include the cause and manner of death, including, but
18not limited to, any deaths resulting from suicide and the
19various types of cancer. If a firefighter separates from a
20fire department or unit of local government with a known
21cancer diagnosis and succumbs to that cancer within 12 months
22after separation, the fire department or unit of local
23government shall report the death to the Office. The the

1Office of the State Fire Marshal shall receive, track, and
2record all reported firefighter deaths, including the cause
3and the manner of death, as reported under this Section for all
4firefighters in Illinois, including suicide and the various
5types of cancer. The Office shall publish an annual report
6concerning the information reported under this Section and
7shall make the report available to the public no later than 90
8days after the end of each calendar year.

10    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
11becoming law.
