| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION | ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
| 3 | to learn of the death of Cheryl F. Green, Ph.D., who passed | ||||||
| 4 | away on April 23, 2025; and | ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Dr. Green was a native of Chicago's South Side; | ||||||
| 6 | at a young age, she served as a literacy tutor, witnessing | ||||||
| 7 | firsthand the disparities in education; she earned her Ph.D. | ||||||
| 8 | in Psychology, and she was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha | ||||||
| 9 | Sorority, Inc.; and | ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Dr. Green became the first Black president, and | ||||||
| 11 | the sixth president overall, of Governors State University in | ||||||
| 12 | July 2020; as president, she made historic moves to elevate | ||||||
| 13 | the visibility of the institution while creating opportunities | ||||||
| 14 | and removing barriers to education; and | ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Dr. Green led the effort to ensure Governors | ||||||
| 16 | State University created a free-standing Social Justice | ||||||
| 17 | Initiative to address barriers to social mobility, equity, and | ||||||
| 18 | justice; she also oversaw the establishment of the Latinx | ||||||
| 19 | Resource Center at the university, which was created to | ||||||
| 20 | support and nurture the growing Latinx student population; and | ||||||
| 21 | WHEREAS, Dr. Green secured Governors State University's | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | largest private donation in history, created the Honors | ||||||
| 2 | College and the College of Graduate Studies, and brought the | ||||||
| 3 | Illinois Black Hall of Fame to the university; she also | ||||||
| 4 | established many new institutions on campus, including the | ||||||
| 5 | first Greek-lettered organizations at Governors State | ||||||
| 6 | University; and | ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Dr. Green was committed to serving her community | ||||||
| 8 | through her work on several corporate and community boards | ||||||
| 9 | across the nation; she impacted many by serving students in | ||||||
| 10 | higher education across several states, including Indiana, | ||||||
| 11 | Tennessee, and Wisconsin; and | ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Dr. Green enjoyed the arts and reading; she loved | ||||||
| 13 | learning about history and often infused speeches with | ||||||
| 14 | historical references to Black history and Latin American | ||||||
| 15 | history; and | ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, Dr. Green was immensely proud of her two adult | ||||||
| 17 | children and spoke fondly of her extensive family; therefore, | ||||||
| 18 | be it | ||||||
| 19 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 20 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 21 | Cheryl F. Green, Ph.D. and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
| 22 | her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | ||||||
