| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
| 3 | | to learn of the death of Justice Thomas E. Hoffman of Chicago, |
| 4 | | who passed away on July 4, 2025 at the age of 77; and |
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Justice Hoffman was born in Chicago on December |
| 6 | | 23, 1947; and |
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Justice Hoffman graduated from Loyola University |
| 8 | | Chicago with his B.B.A. in 1969 and received his J.D. from the |
| 9 | | former John Marshall Law School, now the UIC School of Law, in |
| 10 | | 1971; and |
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Justice Hoffman originally began his career with |
| 12 | | the Chicago Police Department, worked as an Assistant |
| 13 | | Corporation Counsel for the City of Chicago for five years, |
| 14 | | and then entered into private practice; and |
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Justice Hoffman was appointed as an associate |
| 16 | | judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County in 1984 and was |
| 17 | | elected as a circuit judge in 1988; and |
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Justice Hoffman was, additionally, assigned and |
| 19 | | then later elected to the First District Appellate Court and |
| 20 | | served on a statewide panel of five appellate judges to review |

| 1 | | matters pertaining to workers' compensation; and |
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Justice Hoffman was known for his brilliant legal |
| 3 | | mind, articulate writing, and love of the law, which he |
| 4 | | utilized to mentor young attorneys, serve with honor, and |
| 5 | | advocate for justice; and |
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Justice Hoffman taught at both John Marshall and |
| 7 | | DePaul University's law schools and wrote numerous articles |
| 8 | | and lectured on many legal topics; he received the |
| 9 | | Distinguished Alumni award from John Marshall Law School in |
| 10 | | 1988 and served as president of the school's alumni |
| 11 | | association in 1996; and |
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Justice Hoffman enjoyed collecting historical |
| 13 | | memorabilia, being an enthusiast of classic cars, spending |
| 14 | | time on his farm and at his summer home in Michigan, and |
| 15 | | partaking in the delightful food and music of New Orleans and |
| 16 | | was deeply devoted to his family; and |
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Justice Hoffman is survived by his wife, |
| 18 | | Margarita; his children, Thomas, Christopher, Lija, and |
| 19 | | Vincent; and his grandchildren, Thomas, Michael, Brittany, |
| 20 | | Bexley, and Boston; therefore, be it |
| 21 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL |
