SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Justice Thomas E. Hoffman of Chicago,
4who passed away on July 4, 2025 at the age of 77; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Justice Hoffman was born in Chicago on December
623, 1947; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Justice Hoffman graduated from Loyola University
8Chicago with his B.B.A. in 1969 and received his J.D. from the
9former John Marshall Law School, now the UIC School of Law, in
101971; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Justice Hoffman originally began his career with
12the Chicago Police Department, worked as an Assistant
13Corporation Counsel for the City of Chicago for five years,
14and then entered into private practice; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Justice Hoffman was appointed as an associate
16judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County in 1984 and was
17elected as a circuit judge in 1988; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Justice Hoffman was, additionally, assigned and
19then later elected to the First District Appellate Court and
20served on a statewide panel of five appellate judges to review

1matters pertaining to workers' compensation; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Justice Hoffman was known for his brilliant legal
3mind, articulate writing, and love of the law, which he
4utilized to mentor young attorneys, serve with honor, and
5advocate for justice; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Justice Hoffman taught at both John Marshall and
7DePaul University's law schools and wrote numerous articles
8and lectured on many legal topics; he received the
9Distinguished Alumni award from John Marshall Law School in
101988 and served as president of the school's alumni
11association in 1996; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Justice Hoffman enjoyed collecting historical
13memorabilia, being an enthusiast of classic cars, spending
14time on his farm and at his summer home in Michigan, and
15partaking in the delightful food and music of New Orleans and
16was deeply devoted to his family; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Justice Hoffman is survived by his wife,
18Margarita; his children, Thomas, Christopher, Lija, and
19Vincent; and his grandchildren, Thomas, Michael, Brittany,
20Bexley, and Boston; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
2Justice Thomas E. Hoffman and extend our sincere condolences
3to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
4it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6presented to the family of Justice Hoffman as an expression of
7our deepest sympathy.
