SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Frances "Fran" Sullivan of Oak Park,
4who passed away on January 16, 2025 at the age of 89; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Fran Sullivan was raised in the Gannon family
6alongside her siblings, Mary-Alice, Teresa, Bill, and Joan, in
7Mingo, Iowa, where they enjoyed their small town family life;
8she graduated from Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa in
91958; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Fran Sullivan moved to Chicago, where she met
11Monroe "Moe" Sullivan, who shared her passion for social
12justice work and political activism; they married and moved to
13Oak Park in 1964, where they raised four children; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Fran Sullivan was an avid political activist who
15fought for peace, fair housing, women's rights, firearm
16safety, good government, and democratic politics, among other
17interests; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Fran Sullivan was actively engaged in
19door-to-door canvassing, served on multiple boards, raised
20money for nonprofits, frequently attended meetings, and
21volunteered for numerous organizations working to better the

1lives of others; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Fran Sullivan served as a challenge delegate
3during the 1972 Democratic National Convention, where she met
4feminist icons Gloria Steinem and Bella Abzug, who saluted her
5for her tireless support of women in politics; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Fran Sullivan and Moe ventured to Kailua-Kona,
7Hawaii in 1985, where they would eventually purchase two
8condos on the ocean, escaping from the harsh Chicago winters
9to the balmy shores, where they were also surrounded by
10friends and family; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Fran Sullivan's activism helped create the Amate
12House and Peace Museum in Chicago; she also served on the
13Triton Community College Board for six years, and she was
14active with Oak Park Citizens for Handgun Control; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Fran Sullivan served on the board of Family
16Services and Mental Health of Oak Park and River Forest
17(OPRF), known today as Thrive, and she was a member of the
18League of Women Voters for 50 years and active with the
19Democratic Party of Oak Park; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Fran Sullivan supported a number of local
21non-profit organizations, including Growing Community Media,

1Beyond Hunger, Housing Forward, Sarah's Inn, and the Oak Park
2Art League; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Fran Sullivan provided meaningful support to the
4parish of St. Catherine of Siena-St. Lucy Catholic Church,
5where she served as a student mentor at the school; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Fran Sullivan was quite involved in her community
7and was known for her warm personality and ability to connect
8with people, modeling her deep commitment to social justice
9and philanthropy for new generations of Oak Park residents;
10and
 
11    WHEREAS, Fran Sullivan was a talented and competitive
12online Scrabble player as well as the oldest of the early
13morning swimmers at Ridgeland Common Recreation Complex; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Fran Sullivan was preceded in death by her
15siblings, Mary-Alice, Teresa, and Bill; and
 
16    WHEREAS, At the time of her passing, Fran Sullivan was
17survived by her children, K.T. (Chris Bing) Sullivan, John
18(Vicki Scaman) Sullivan, Monroe (Melissa) Sullivan, and
19Patrick (the late Dawn) Sullivan; her grandchildren, Casey,
20Leah, Gillian, Patty, Phoebe, Maggie, Mikey, and Leo; her
21great-grandchildren, Eleanor, Siena, and Claire; her sister,

1Joan Gannon; and her many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
 
2    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
3ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
4Frances "Fran" Sullivan and extend our sincere condolences to
5her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
6further
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8presented to the family of Fran Sullivan as an expression of
9our deepest sympathy.
