SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Patrick Miller Hemingway of Bozeman,
4Montana, who passed away on September 2, 2025 at the age of 97;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Patrick Hemingway, affectionately known by his
7family as Mouse, was born in Kansas City, Missouri to Ernest
8Hemingway and Pauline Pfeiffer on June 28, 1928; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Patrick Hemingway spent his youth in both Cuba
10and Key West, Florida, adventuring with his father on his
11fishing boat, Pilar; after his graduation from Canterbury
12School, a Catholic boarding school in Connecticut, he attended
13Stanford University before transferring to and graduating from
14Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and
15Literature in 1950; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Patrick Hemingway and Henrietta Broyles married
17that same year, and they later moved to Tanganyika, now
18Tanzania, and purchased a 2,300-acre farm; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Patrick Hemingway began his career dedicated to
20wildlife instruction at the College of African Wildlife
21Management; he became a forestry officer of the United Nations

1Food and Agriculture Organization, and over time, he gained
2global recognition for his safaris and expeditions; he served
3as a guide, expert, and honorary game warden in British East
4Africa; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Patrick Hemingway became a father to his
6daughter, Edwina "Mina" Hemingway, in the early 1960s while
7also looking after his sick wife, who sadly passed away in
81963; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Patrick Hemingway moved back to the United States
10with his daughter, settling in Bozeman in 1975; he married
11Carol Thompson, a professor of theater arts at the City
12College of New York, in 1982; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Patrick Hemingway supervised and edited many of
14the posthumously published works of his father, Ernest
15Hemingway, including Dear Papa: The Letters of Patrick and
16Ernest Hemingway and True at First Light, a fictitious
17rendition of Ernest Hemingway's own experiences in Africa
18around the mid-1950s; he and his second wife established the
19Patrick and Carol T. Hemingway Scholar-In-Residence at the
20John F. Kennedy Library in 2023; he was previously featured in
21a Kennedy Library Forum in 2006, where he engaged in a dialogue
22about his life, the legacy of his famous father, and his
23contributions to wildlife conservation in Africa; and

1    WHEREAS, Patrick Hemingway was preceded in death by his
2father, Ernest Hemingway; his mother, Pauline Pfeiffer; his
3brother, Jack Hemingway; and his sister, Gloria Hemingway; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Patrick Hemingway is survived by his daughter,
5Edwina Hemingway; his four grandchildren; and his seven
6great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
9Patrick Miller Hemingway and extend our sincere condolences to
10his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
11further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the family of Patrick Hemingway as an expression
14of our deepest sympathy.
