SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Patrick Miller Hemingway of Bozeman, Montana, who passed away on September 2, 2025 at the age of 97; and

WHEREAS, Patrick Hemingway, affectionately known by his family as Mouse, was born in Kansas City, Missouri to Ernest Hemingway and Pauline Pfeiffer on June 28, 1928; and

WHEREAS, Patrick Hemingway spent his youth in both Cuba and Key West, Florida, adventuring with his father on his fishing boat, Pilar; after his graduation from Canterbury School, a Catholic boarding school in Connecticut, he attended Stanford University before transferring to and graduating from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Literature in 1950; and

WHEREAS, Patrick Hemingway and Henrietta Broyles married that same year, and they later moved to Tanganyika, now Tanzania, and purchased a 2,300-acre farm; and

WHEREAS, Patrick Hemingway began his career dedicated to wildlife instruction at the College of African Wildlife Management; he became a forestry officer of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, and over time, he gained global recognition for his safaris and expeditions; he served as a guide, expert, and honorary game warden in British East Africa; and

WHEREAS, Patrick Hemingway became a father to his daughter, Edwina "Mina" Hemingway, in the early 1960s while also looking after his sick wife, who sadly passed away in 1963; and

WHEREAS, Patrick Hemingway moved back to the United States with his daughter, settling in Bozeman in 1975; he married Carol Thompson, a professor of theater arts at the City College of New York, in 1982; and

WHEREAS, Patrick Hemingway supervised and edited many of the posthumously published works of his father, Ernest Hemingway, including Dear Papa: The Letters of Patrick and Ernest Hemingway and True at First Light, a fictitious rendition of Ernest Hemingway's own experiences in Africa around the mid-1950s; he and his second wife established the Patrick and Carol T. Hemingway Scholar-In-Residence at the John F. Kennedy Library in 2023; he was previously featured in a Kennedy Library Forum in 2006, where he engaged in a dialogue about his life, the legacy of his famous father, and his contributions to wildlife conservation in Africa; and

WHEREAS, Patrick Hemingway was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Hemingway; his mother, Pauline Pfeiffer; his brother, Jack Hemingway; and his sister, Gloria Hemingway; and

WHEREAS, Patrick Hemingway is survived by his daughter, Edwina Hemingway; his four grandchildren; and his seven great-grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Patrick Miller Hemingway and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Patrick Hemingway as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
