SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Marcus M. "Mark" Olson of Peoria, who
4passed away on January 3, 2026; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Mark Olson, the son of Frank and Ida (Anttila)
6Olson, was born in Marquette, Michigan on October 9, 1927; he
7married M. Elaine Stolpe on September 16, 1947, and she
8preceded him in death on October 24, 1996; he served in the
9United States Army; he earned his bachelor's degree in
10engineering from Michigan Technological University (Michigan
11Tech), where he played hockey and was named MVP for three
12seasons; he later received his master's degree in engineering
13from Bradley University; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Mark Olson moved from Michigan's Upper Peninsula
15to Peoria, Illinois in 1963, where he began his career as an
16electrical engineer in defense products at Caterpillar Inc.;
17he retired in 1986; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Mark Olson, a pioneer in youth hockey, was
19instrumental in establishing programs in Escanaba, Michigan
20and later in Central Illinois, co-founding the Peoria Blades
21with Pete BardezBanian; he remained deeply involved in the
22sport throughout his life, serving as a high school, college,

1and amateur hockey referee, and he proudly officiated an NCAA
2Division I Final Four Championship Game; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Mark Olson was a past president and lifetime
4member of the Independent Sports Club of Peoria, and he was
5also a lifetime member of the Old Timers Baseball Association
6and the Rivermen Booster Club; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Mark Olson was inducted into numerous halls of
8fame, including the Michigan Tech Athletic Hall of Fame, the
9Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame, the Illinois Hockey Hall
10of Fame, the Peoria Rivermen Hall of Fame, and the Greater
11Peoria Area Sports Hall of Fame, where he also received the
12Neve Harms Award; in his youth, he was a three-time world
13logrolling champion in the junior division, and he later
14earned multiple second place finishes in the senior division;
15and
 
16    WHEREAS, Mark Olson was a devoted father, grandfather,
17great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and uncle; known
18affectionately as "Gramps" or "Grandpa", he was famous for
19sending handwritten cards and letters filled with
20encouragement and his trademark advice; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Mark Olson was preceded in death by his parents;
22his sons, Richard M. "Ric" Olson and Joseph A. Olson; two

1infant grandchildren; his son-in-law, Gerald "Jerry" Brady
2Jr.; his sisters, Ruth and Virginia; and his brothers, Wesley,
3Allan, Paul, Gordon, Edward, Roy, Ted, and Weldon; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Mark Olson is survived by his son, Michael P.
5(Laurie) Olson; his daughters, Susan I. Brady, Jane A. (Mark)
6Golowski, and Patti L. (Bob) Keegan; 15 grandchildren; 19
7great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren, with
8three more expected in 2026; his sister-in-law, Helen Olson;
9and many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
12Marcus M. "Mark" Olson and extend our sincere condolences to
13his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
14further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Mark Olson as an expression of our
17deepest sympathy.
