SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Muscular dystrophy is a group of genetic diseases 
3that cause progressive muscle weakness and degeneration of 
4skeletal muscles; and
 
5    WHEREAS, There are more than 30 distinct forms of muscular 
6dystrophy, which vary in age of onset, severity, and 
7progression and affect individuals across the lifespan; and
 
8    WHEREAS, All forms of muscular dystrophy are progressive 
9and may lead to significant mobility limitations, loss of 
10independence, and impacts on quality of life for individuals 
11and families; and
 
12    WHEREAS, A comprehensive awareness month would ensure that 
13individuals living with less common forms of muscular 
14dystrophy are represented; and
 
15    WHEREAS, September is recognized nationally and globally 
16as Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month by leading health and 
17advocacy organizations; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL 
19ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare September 
202026 as Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month in the State of

1Illinois to raise awareness of all forms of muscular dystrophy 
2and to encourage education, public understanding, and 
3continued research related to the many subtypes of muscular 
4dystrophy.
