SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Our nation's longstanding and ongoing audacious
3experiment in self-governance requires a populace with an
4understanding of the nation's laws and government, the skills
5for discussion and working together across differences, and a
6widespread commitment to the civic strength of our
7communities; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Civic education is vital to sustaining and
9strengthening constitutional democracy in the United States of
10America; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The practice of democracy must be taught and
12learned anew by each generation; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Educators are often engaged in thankless yet
14essential daily work to support young people in their
15development of an informed and empowered civic identity that
16is core to sustaining and strengthening our nation's
17constitutional democracy; and
 
18    WHEREAS, The Illinois General Assembly has strengthened
19K-12 civic education in the State over the past decade by
20requiring civics courses in middle school and high school, and
21the Illinois Civics Hub has grown the Illinois Democracy

1Schools Network to more than 90 public and private schools and
2districts statewide, each of them deeply committed to
3students' civic development and to supporting teachers,
4schools, and districts throughout Illinois with civics course
5and standards implementation; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The 250th anniversary of the Declaration of
7Independence occurring during this current year calls on our
8collective ability and commitment to work across our
9differences and reinvest ourselves in making civic learning
10for all students a community, state, and national priority;
11therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare March 9
14through March 15, 2026 as Civic Learning Week in the State of
15Illinois; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That we extend our deepest appreciation to the
17students, volunteers, and professionals who prioritize the
18enterprise of civic learning within our communities.
