SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Zachary Charles "Zackie" Monroe of
4Bartonville, formerly of Peoria, who passed away on January
519, 2026; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Zackie Monroe was born in Peoria on July 8, 1931;
7he graduated from Bradley University; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Zackie Monroe's baseball career began in 1952
9before being interrupted by his military service; he returned
10to the sport in June 1958, posting a 10-2 record for the
11Triple-A minor league team the Denver Bears; he was then
12called up by the New York Yankees, making his major league
13debut by pitching three and one-third hitless innings of
14relief against the Kansas City Athletics; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Zackie Monroe pitched an additional 20 games for
16the Yankees, making six starts and registering a complete game
17victory in September 1958 against the Boston Red Sox at Yankee
18Stadium; he played in the 1958 World Series, where the Yankees
19ultimately won the team's 18th World Series Championship; he
20pitched three games in relief for the Yankees in 1959 before
21being sent down to the Triple-A league; he remained in the
22minor leagues before retiring in 1962; and

1    WHEREAS, During his Major League Baseball career, Zackie
2Monroe compiled a 4-2 record with one save, one complete game,
3a 3.38 earned run average, and 19 strikeouts in 24
4appearances; amidst the 61 and one-third innings pitched, he
5permitted 60 hits and 29 bases on balls; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Zackie Monroe will be remembered for his
7influence and legacy on the game of baseball; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
9ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
10Zachary Charles "Zackie" Monroe and extend our sincere
11condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
12him; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to the family of Zackie Monroe as an expression of
15our deepest sympathy.
