SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of former North Carolina Governor James
4B. Hunt Jr.; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Gov. Hunt dedicated more than 50 years to public
6service, including serving as the Governor of North Carolina
7for four terms; as governor, he transformed education in North
8Carolina and across the country, and he became known as the
9country's first education governor; during his tenure, he
10developed the Smart Start program, created the National Board
11for Professional Teaching Standards, advocated for higher
12teacher pay, established statewide kindergarten, and supported
13technology in every school and policy grounded in research;
14and
 
15    WHEREAS, After leaving office in 2001, Gov. Hunt founded
16The Hunt Institute, a nonprofit organization to increase
17access to the best educational research and national resource
18experts and to provide a space across party lines to work on
19strengthening education policy; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Gov. Hunt was noted for his ability to make those
21around him feel like the hard work they were doing actually
22mattered, and he will be remembered for his dedication to

1education, teachers, and students; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Gov. Hunt was the husband of Carolyn Hunt; the
3father of four children, Rachel, Baxter, Elizabeth, and
4Rebecca; and the grandfather and great-grandfather of many;
5therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
7ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
8former North Carolina Governor James B. Hunt Jr. and extend
9our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who
10knew and loved him; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the family of Gov. Hunt as an expression of our
13deepest sympathy.
