| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened |
| 3 | | to learn of the death of former North Carolina Governor James |
| 4 | | B. Hunt Jr.; and |
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Gov. Hunt dedicated more than 50 years to public |
| 6 | | service, including serving as the Governor of North Carolina |
| 7 | | for four terms; as governor, he transformed education in North |
| 8 | | Carolina and across the country, and he became known as the |
| 9 | | country's first education governor; during his tenure, he |
| 10 | | developed the Smart Start program, created the National Board |
| 11 | | for Professional Teaching Standards, advocated for higher |
| 12 | | teacher pay, established statewide kindergarten, and supported |
| 13 | | technology in every school and policy grounded in research; |
| 14 | | and |
| 15 | | WHEREAS, After leaving office in 2001, Gov. Hunt founded |
| 16 | | The Hunt Institute, a nonprofit organization to increase |
| 17 | | access to the best educational research and national resource |
| 18 | | experts and to provide a space across party lines to work on |
| 19 | | strengthening education policy; and |
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Gov. Hunt was noted for his ability to make those |
| 21 | | around him feel like the hard work they were doing actually |
| 22 | | mattered, and he will be remembered for his dedication to |
