SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, On an average day, more than 700 injury crashes
3involve distracted driving, and the economic toll of all motor
4vehicle crashes in the United States annually exceeds $400
5billion; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Talking on a mobile phone, even in hands-free
7mode, texting, and programming your dashboard infotainment
8system or GPS device can divert your attention away from
9driving and result in physical or cognitive distraction; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Illinois residents and all Americans deserve to
11live in communities that promote safe driving behaviors and
12healthy lifestyles; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Preventing distracted driving injuries and deaths
14requires the cooperation of all levels of government,
15employers, and the general public; and
 
16    WHEREAS, The National Safety Council and the State of
17Illinois work to promote policies, practices, and procedures
18leading to increased safety, protection, and health in
19business and industry, in schools and colleges, on roads and
20highways, and in homes and communities; and

1    WHEREAS, In April 2026, the National Safety Council will
2provide the nation with a month-long distracted driving public
3education campaign; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Spring is a time when people begin to log more
5miles on the road, and it is imperative to focus attention on
6motor vehicle injury risks and preventions; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare April 2026
9as Distracted Driving Awareness Month in the State of
10Illinois; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That we urge the citizens and businesses of the
12State of Illinois to observe Distracted Driving Awareness
13Month by practicing safe driving behaviors and pledging to
14drive distraction-free.
