SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Thomas "Tom" Friye of Quincy, who
4passed away on January 31, 2026; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Tom Friye, the son of Ted and Glenora (Heubner)
6Friye, was born in Quincy on January 31, 1942; he attended St.
7Francis Grade School and graduated from Christian Brothers
8Catholic High School in 1960; he also took classes at Iowa
9State University to become a registered landscape architect;
10he married Nancy Bardon at St. John Catholic Church on October
118, 1966; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Tom Friye briefly worked for Grieving Sheet-Metal
13before joining Hamann Florist, where he worked for 10 years;
14he began working for Bergman Nurseries in January 1971 and
15stayed for 28 years; he and his three sons purchased Bergman
16Nurseries from the Bergman family in 1999, which became a
17highlight of his career; he was well-known in and around the
18Quincy area for his artistic and design abilities in landscape
19architecture, and after 41 years in the landscaping business,
20he retired in June 2012; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Tom Friye served on numerous local boards and
22organizations, including the Quincy Roman Catholic Cemetery

1Board for over 30 years, the Quincy Tree Commission, and the
2Quincy Notre Dame High School (QND) Board of Directors; he
3also coached baseball through the Quincy Park District for
4many years; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Tom Friye thoroughly enjoyed following all of his
6sons' sports and school activities, and he was passionate
7about QND sports; he and his wife enjoyed traveling, going on
8many wonderful trips with his sister and brother-in-law,
9Carolyn and Denny Lubbe, as well as vacations with his
10lifelong friends, Tom and Shirley Kane; he also enjoyed
11hunting and fishing with family and friends; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Tom Friye was a steadfast husband, father,
13grandfather, and great-grandfather; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Tom Friye was preceded in death by his parents;
15his in-laws, Harold and Alvera Bardon; and his
16brothers-in-law, Bruce Bardon and Roger Bockhaus; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Tom Friye is survived by his wife of 59 years,
18Nancy; his sons, Todd (Dee) Friye, Travis (Pam) Friye, and
19Trevor (April) Friye; seven grandchildren; two
20great-grandchildren; his sister, Carolyn (Denny) Lubbe; his
21sister-in-law, Barbara Bardon Bockhaus; and numerous nieces
22and nephews; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
3Thomas "Tom" Friye and extend our sincere condolences to his
4family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
5further
 
6    RESOLVED, That suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Tom Friye as an expression of our
8deepest sympathy.
