SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Ned P. Broemmel of Quincy, who passed
4away on January 22, 2026; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Ned Broemmel was born to Paul Bernard Broemmel
6and Ethel (Stork) Broemmel in Quincy on August 14, 1939; he
7attended Madison School, graduated from Quincy High School in
81957, and was a 1961 graduate of Culver-Stockton College,
9where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity; after
10serving in the United States Army and the Illinois National
11Guard, where he attained the rank of sergeant, he received his
12teaching certificate from Quincy College; he married D. Reaugh
13Swallow on June 10, 1966; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Ned Broemmel taught math and business at Quincy
15Junior High; when Reaugh's father became ill, Ned took
16responsibility for the insurance business and spent nearly 40
17years with Mass Mutual Life Insurance Company; he earned
18multiple sales awards and developed relationships with
19numerous local businesses and their employees; for 18 years,
20he co-owned Quincy's Maid Rite East restaurant with members of
21the Geise family; he enjoyed working with teenagers in their
22first jobs and creating new recipes to expand the menu; and

1    WHEREAS, Ned Broemmel was very involved in the community;
2he belonged to First Union Congregational Church and served on
3the board for many years; he was also a member of local
4organizations such as the Quincy Preservation Commission and
5the Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County; he held a
6variety of leadership roles, including his time as president
7of the Noon Rotary Club and president of the Quincy Art Club;
8he received the City of Quincy Arts Award for Volunteer
9Leadership in 1990; he and Reaugh were the first volunteer
10chairpersons of the Quincy Public Schools Foundation's annual
11fundraising campaign in 2018; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Ned Broemmel raised two daughters, Melissa and
13Katherine, with his wife; he was a hands-on homeowner who
14spent much of his free time working in the yard or renovating
15the family home, and he and Reaugh passed on their love of
16landscaping and home improvement to their daughters; the
17entire family loved to travel, taking many trips to national
18parks, historic sites, and museums; he was a member of the
19Quincy Country Club, where he enjoyed dances, dining, and
20parties with friends; he was also a Chicago Cubs fan and loved
21to watch the team play at Wrigley Field; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Ned Broemmel was preceded in death by his
23parents; his parents-in-law, Walter C. and Dorothy (Liggett)
24Swallow Jr.; a brother-in-law, Walter C. Swallow III; his

1daughter, Katherine R. Broemmel; and his aunts and uncles; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Ned Broemmel is survived by his wife; his
3daughter, Melissa (David) Schaefer and David's daughter,
4Katie; his cousins, William R. (Linda) Waterkotte, Roseann
5(Jim) Terwelp, Barbara (Terry) Niewohner, Mary Lou (Terry)
6Tucker, Carol (Tom) Sparrow, and Ruth Terlisner; additionally,
7Suzanne (Alan Buzzard) and Robert (Jane Flick) Heidbreder;
8therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
11Ned P. Broemmel and extend our sincere condolences to his
12family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
13further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to the family of Ned Broemmel as an expression of our
16deepest sympathy.
