SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3congratulate Dr. Lawrence Van Oyen, professor of music at
4North Central College in Naperville, on the occasion of his
5retirement following a distinguished career dedicated to music
6education, performance, and community service; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Dr. Van Oyen is a graduate of Michigan State
8University, where he dedicated himself to music education
9before teaching for three years in the Michigan public
10schools, completing his master's degree, and serving as the
11director of bands and instructor of saxophone at Peru State
12College in Nebraska; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Since 1992, Dr. Van Oyen has served as professor
14of music, director of bands, and instructor of saxophone at
15North Central College, where for over three decades he has
16shaped the musical lives of countless students, instilling in
17them technical skill, artistic discipline, and a lifelong
18appreciation for the power of music; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Dr. Van Oyen's profound impact as a teacher and
20mentor has been recognized by North Central College through
21the Dissinger Award for distinguished teaching and leadership,
22which he has received twice, and his colleagues and students

1alike know him as someone who takes the time to establish a
2personal connection with every student, whose door is always
3open, and who cares deeply for the well-being of those around
4him; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The North Central College Concert Winds has
6developed a widely recognized reputation for its technical
7precision and exceptional musicianship under Dr. Van Oyen's
8leadership, and he has fostered a culture of genuineness and
9kindness that is deeply embedded in the band program and will
10remain as a lasting part of his legacy; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Dr. Van Oyen is an accomplished performer, having
12won the Eastern Michigan Concerto contest and served as the
13principal alto saxophonist on the recording Sea Drift: Wind
14Music of Anthony Iannaccone on the Albany label, and he is a
15highly sought-after saxophone soloist, clinician, adjudicator,
16and private instructor throughout the Midwest; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Dr. Van Oyen has pursued innovative
18interdisciplinary work at North Central College, collaborating
19with Dr. Richard Wilders of the mathematics department on
20research exploring the relationships found in math, music, and
21art, with their findings published in the national journals
22Mathematics Teacher and Mathematics Teaching in the Middle
23School, and presenting Across the Curriculum recitals in

1collaboration with faculty from a variety of departments; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Dr. Van Oyen is the founder of the Chords for Kids
3concert program at North Central College, which has been
4dedicated to providing meaningful concert experiences for
5children with autism and their families for 19 years, opening
6the doors of live musical performance to those who might
7otherwise face barriers to attending such events; Dr. Van Oyen
8has presented at both state and national conventions of the
9National Association for Music Education to share his
10expertise so that similar programs may be established across
11the nation; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Dr.
14Lawrence Van Oyen, professor of music at North Central
15College, on the occasion of his retirement for his decades of
16distinguished service to music education, his extraordinary
17dedication to enriching the lives of children with autism and
18their families through the Chords for Kids program, and the
19profound and lasting impact he has had on his students and
20colleagues throughout his remarkable career; and be it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22presented to Dr. Van Oyen as an expression of our esteem and
23respect.
