SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of John Squibb, PhD of Chatham, formerly
4of Mount Vernon, who passed away on April 3, 2026; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Squibb, the son of John William and Venita
6Christine (Hamlin) Squibb, was born in Seminole, Oklahoma on
7November 26, 1942; he earned his bachelor's and master's
8degrees in history and political science from Southern
9Illinois University Carbondale and his doctorate in American
10constitutional history and law from the University of
11Wisconsin - Madison; he married Mary Lou Rios in Springfield
12on October 15, 1994, and she preceded him in death on September
1323, 2020; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Dr. Squibb was a history and political science
15professor at Lincoln Land Community College (LLCC) and the
16University of Illinois Springfield, formerly Sangamon State
17University, from 1970-2007, returning to LLCC soon after to
18work as an adjunct instructor for 12 years; in his time at
19LLCC, he served as Social Science Division chairperson and was
20a member of the union, working for improved benefits,
21conditions, and pay; he taught thousands of students and
22maintained long-term friendships with many, and his colleagues
23made an indelible impression on him with their dedication,

1talents, and commitment to higher education and learning; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Dr. Squibb was admired for his teaching skills
3and classroom humor, receiving honors that included the
4Western Illinois Most Inspirational Teacher Award in 2000,
5multiple selections as a finalist for the Drs. Raymond and Ann
6Pearson Master Teacher Award, the Master Teacher Award in
72002, and the National Institute for Staff Organization and
8Development Teaching Excellence Award; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Dr. Squibb attended Cherry Hills Baptist Church;
10he loved attending spring training baseball games with family
11in Arizona and watching Boston Red Sox baseball and Wisconsin
12Badgers basketball and football; he enjoyed reading and being
13with his pets, most recently his twin Yorkshire terriers, and
14he missed spending time with his late wife most of all; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Dr. Squibb was preceded in death by his parents
16and his brother, William C. Squibb; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Dr. Squibb is survived by his daughters, Tanum
18(Enrique) Smith and Tanya Smith; his son, Brad (Dawn) Squibb;
19his grandchildren, Eric Smith, Allison (Zeke) Rowe, Connor
20(Abigail) Smith, Jim Pounds, Royal Squibb, Peytin Bryant, and
21Alexis Bryant; and his great-grandchildren, Rylee Rowe and
22Wyola Wynn; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
3John Squibb, PhD and extend our sincere condolences to his
4family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
5further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Dr. Squibb as an expression of our
8deepest sympathy.
