| 2 | | WHEREAS, On October 13, 1775, the United States Navy was |
| 3 | | founded when the Continental Congress agreed to supply General |
| 4 | | George Washington with an armed schooner and a sloop; and |
| 5 | | WHEREAS, The U.S. Navy has been used successfully in the |
| 6 | | American Revolution, World War I, World War II, the Korean |
| 7 | | War, the Vietnam War, Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Operation |
| 8 | | Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom; and |
| 9 | | WHEREAS, The U.S. Navy plays a critical role in the |
| 10 | | defense of the United States and in preserving the lives and |
| 11 | | liberties of its citizens, which it does through the placement |
| 12 | | of installations such as the Illinois-based Naval Station |
| 13 | | Great Lakes (NAVSTA Great Lakes); and |
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Opened in 1911, NAVSTA Great Lakes is the U.S. |
| 15 | | Navy's largest training installation and the home of the U.S. |
| 16 | | Navy's only boot camp, and its mission is to enable and sustain |
| 17 | | the fleet, family, and fighter by providing superior, |
| 18 | | integrated Base Operating Support for all tenant commands and |
| 19 | | elements on the installation; and |
| 20 | | WHEREAS, NAVSTA Great Lakes is located on over 1,600 acres |
| 21 | | overlooking Lake Michigan, and the installation includes 1,153 |
