SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Billie Jean Lucas, who passed away on
4September 22, 2025; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Billie Jean Lucas was born in Florence,
6Mississippi to Mitchell and Mattie Hopson on March 17, 1936;
7and
 
8    WHEREAS, Billie Jean Lucas spent 23 years at the Sara Lee
9Bakery Corporation; later, she worked at the Illinois State
10Tollway Authority before retiring in 1991; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Billie Jean Lucas's faith was the foundation of
12her life; she was a member of Mt. Zion First Holy Miracle
13Baptist Church for 30 years, where she served in the gospel
14choir for 16 years and was Mother's Board chairperson,
15secretary, and treasurer for seven years; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Billie Jean Lucas enjoyed cooking, gardening,
17backyard grilling, and partying with her friends and family;
18she had a great sense of humor and uplifted everyone around her
19with her wit; her kindness and compassion inspired those
20around her, and her generosity and consideration for others
21were hallmarks of her character; and

1    WHEREAS, Billie Jean Lucas was preceded in death by her
2parents; her husband, Frank; her children, Kenneth
3Hopson-Lucas, Daryl Lucas, and Faye Lucas; three sisters; and
4six brothers; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Billie Jean Lucas is survived by her daughters,
6Carolyn Todd and Sherry Lucas-Tate; her Godson, Edgar
7(Carolyn) Seale; her granddaughters, Melloney (Henry) Owens,
8Kamilah (Jeremy) Todd, LaTashia Hayes, Rokenna (Cordney)
9Holmes, and Kenya (Antoine) Patterson; 10 great-grandchildren;
10five great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews,
11cousins, and friends; and her special friends, Mother Callie
12Shears, Sister Jennie Howell, Anthony James, and Larry Hughes;
13therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
15ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
16Billie Jean Lucas and extend our sincere condolences to her
17family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
18further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of Billie Jean Lucas as an expression
21of our deepest sympathy.
