SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Steven Almon "Steve" Cornett of
4Danville, who passed away on May 27, 2026; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Steve Cornett, the son of Coy and Nancy Cornett,
6was born in Danville on December 2, 1961; he graduated from
7Danville High School in 1980 and earned his associate's degree
8at Danville Area Community College; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Steve Cornett began his career working for the
10fire department and later became an emergency medical
11technician (EMT); he dedicated more than three decades to law
12enforcement, serving as a police officer from 1984 until his
13retirement in 2017; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Steve Cornett remained active in his retirement,
15serving as a deputy coroner, a firearms instructor, and most
16recently, a semitruck driver for Ribbe Trucking; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Steve Cornett enjoyed hunting, fishing, shooting
18pool, and traveling; he loved gathering with family and
19friends to share jokes and stories, and he was always there to
20listen, help, or give advice; he cherished his family above
21all, and one of his greatest joys was spending time with his

1wife, children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Steve Cornett was a devoted husband, father,
3grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who
4will be remembered for his booming laugh, his gift for
5storytelling, and his generous heart; he lived a life marked
6by integrity, hard work, generosity, loyalty, and an
7unforgettable sense of humor; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Steve Cornett leaves behind a legacy measured not
9by accomplishments alone but also by the countless lives he
10touched, the laughter he shared, and the memories he created
11with those fortunate enough to know him; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Steve Cornett was preceded in death by his
13parents; his in-laws, Jerry and Joyce Elmore; his
14brother-in-law, Denny Elmore; his sister-in-law, Debbie
15Sheets; and his grandson, Wyatt Bailey; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Steve Cornett is survived by his wife of 38
17years, Charlene; his children, Rick Wagner, Myretta
18Fitzsimmons, Amanda (Rory) Overmyer, Jodi (Lawrence) Davis,
19Stephanie (Brian) Bailey, and Tricia (Donnie) McKinney; 14
20grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; his siblings, Coy
21Cornett Jr., Dave (Debbie) Cornett, Sherry (Bob) Singleton,
22and Dave (Tammy) Elmore; and many nieces and nephews;

2    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
3ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
4Steven Almon "Steve" Cornett and extend our sincere
5condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
6him; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8presented to the family of Steve Cornett as an expression of
9our deepest sympathy.
