SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Luke William Peterson of Chatham, who
4passed away on May 25, 2026; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Luke Peterson was born to Emily (Reid) and Chad
6Peterson in Chicago on September 19, 2012; he and his family
7moved to Springfield in 2014, and he proceeded to attend
8Ball-Chatham Community Unit School District 5 to start
9kindergarten, where he was quickly labeled a quiet leader; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Luke Peterson, known by many as an exceptional
11baseball and basketball player in the Springfield and Chatham
12communities, took a deep interest in athletics from an early
13age and proved to be a natural at most sports he tried; he
14loved competing, especially against his brother, Reid, and
15their one-on-one competitions were heated but full of
16laughter; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Luke Peterson was a hard worker, spending
18countless hours shooting hoops, pitching, taking batting
19practice, and attending developmental camps; before long, he
20earned a spot on a series of highly-competitive traveling
21teams; as a gifted player, he often played up a level with
22teammates who were a year older; his ability, commitment, and

1kindness made him a beloved member on each team he joined,
2earning him countless friends along the way; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Luke Peterson was an intense competitor who wore
4#53, when possible, to honor his grandfather's race car
5number; a talented left-handed pitcher with a smooth, powerful
6swing, he also displayed a natural grace of movement and
7tremendous vision on the basketball court; he developed a
8reputation among his coaches and teammates for delivering
9intense, high-stakes moments, earning him the nickname "Cool
10Man Luke"; his poise under pressure translated into some
11triumphant plays and dramatic victories over the course of his
12career; in his typically understated manner, he would
13celebrate such moments with a quick fist pump, a headshake,
14and a satisfied smile; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Luke Peterson, though quiet, still possessed
16plenty of swagger and personality; he had confidence in his
17style from a young age, wearing flashy clothes, sporting lots
18of athletic gear to match his favorite players, and rocking a
19long-flowing mullet by age seven; in his early years, he loved
20dressing up, wearing a Paw Patrol or Ninja Turtles costume on a
21seemingly daily basis; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Beyond his athletic pursuits, Luke Peterson loved
23spending time with his friends, especially his brothers in

1life, Levi Isringhausen and Jace Meier, and his cousin, Fiona
2Corley; though he was always popular among his peers, he
3remained inclusive and had an innate sweetness to him, always
4looking to connect with people and bring them into his circle;
5he also enjoyed spending time with his younger cousins,
6flashing his radiant, slow smile as they sang and danced
7around the room; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Luke Peterson was an exceptional son who adored
9his parents and looked up to his brother, Reid, and he will be
10remembered as a humble, compassionate, and charismatic young
11man who pursued excellence in everything he did; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Luke Peterson is survived by his mother; his
13father; his brother; his grandparents, Jerry and Lynn Peterson
14and Jack and Sue Reid; his great-grandmother, Kathryn "Kit"
15Refine; and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins; therefore,
16be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
18ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
19Luke William Peterson and extend our sincere condolences to
20his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
21further
 
22    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
