| AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend House Bill 4197 by replacing |

| everything after the enacting clause with the following:

| "Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing Section |

| 2-3.123 as follows:

| (105 ILCS 5/2-3.123)

| Sec. 2-3.123. Giant Steps Autism Center for Excellence
|

| pilot program. From
appropriations made for purposes of this |
| 9 |
| Section, the State Board of Education, in consultation with the |
| 10 |
| Illinois Board of Higher Education,
shall implement and |
| 11 |
| administer a Giant Steps Autism Center for Excellence
pilot
|
| 12 |
| program for the study and
evaluation of autism and to provide |
| 13 |
| related teacher training and other services. The program
shall |
| 14 |
| be operated over a period of 3 school years, beginning with
the |
| 15 |
| 2004-2005
1997-1998 school year. The State Board of Education |
| 16 |
| is authorized to make
grants to school districts that apply to |
| 17 |
| participate in the Giant Steps Autism Center for Excellence
|
| 18 |
| program
as implemented and administered by the State Board of |
| 19 |
| Education. The State
Board of Education shall by rule provide |
| 20 |
| the form of application and criteria
to be used and applied in |
| 21 |
| selecting participating school districts.
