1     AN ACT in relation to education.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing Section
5 21-5 as follows:
 
6     (105 ILCS 5/21-5)  (from Ch. 122, par. 21-5)
7     Sec. 21-5. High school certificate.
8     (a) A high school certificate shall be valid for 4 years
9 for teaching in grades 6 to 12 inclusive of the common schools.
10 Subject to the provisions of Section 21-1a, it shall be issued
11 to persons who have graduated from a recognized institution of
12 higher learning with a bachelor's degree and with not fewer
13 than 120 semester hours including 16 semester hours in
14 professional education, 5 of which shall be in student teaching
15 under competent and close supervision and with one or more
16 teaching fields. These Such persons shall be recommended for
17 the high school certificate by a recognized institution as
18 having completed an approved program of preparation which
19 includes the academic and professional courses approved by the
20 State Superintendent of Education in consultation with the
21 State Teacher Certification Board.
22     (b) Beginning February 15, 2000, Initial and Standard
23 Secondary Certificates shall be issued to persons who meet all
24 of the criteria established by the State Board of Education for
25 secondary education.
