| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, It has come to the attention of the Members of |
3 |
| this Body that
the Illinois Farmers Union is celebrating its |
4 |
| 50th anniversary this year;
and |
5 |
| WHEREAS, The Illinois Farmers Union is an affiliate of the |
6 |
| Farmers
Educational and Cooperative Union of America, |
7 |
| chartered on August 12, 1954, for
the purpose of accomplishing |
8 |
| tasks that are impossible to accomplish on an
individual basis; |
9 |
| and |
10 |
| WHEREAS, Some of the goals of the Farmers Union are: to |
11 |
| strengthen family
farms and prevent the exodus of farmers from |
12 |
| the land; to gain economic justice
for farmers; to give farmers |
13 |
| a voice in shaping the world in which they live;
to improve |
14 |
| standards of living for all people; to create a peaceful world; |
15 |
| to
promote agriculture as the No. 1 industry in Illinois; to |
16 |
| promote the use of
agricultural products and value added |
17 |
| products which will utilize the labor and
natural resources of |
18 |
| Illinois; to develop a tax system which does not put the
entire |
19 |
| burden of funding education on property owners; to lobby for |
20 |
| legislation
which is good for rural Illinois and against |
21 |
| legislation that our members feel
is detrimental to agriculture |
22 |
| and to the rural population of Illinois; and to
promote |
23 |
| policies which will encourage family farmers to remain on the |
24 |
| land and
preserve our most valuable natural resource - the |
25 |
| capacity to produce food; and |
26 |
| WHEREAS, The Illinois Farmers Union has contributed to the |
27 |
| farming community
in many ways, including: getting the number |
28 |
| of farm vehicle plates allowed
increased from two to five; |
29 |
| helping to establish the Agri-Chemical Fund and
staving off a |
30 |
| 2% tax on farm chemicals and fertilizers; relieving the |
31 |
| liability
of directors and officers of soil and water districts |
32 |
| for damages in the
performance of their jobs; allowing electric |
