| WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the |
| 3 |
| State of Illinois are pleased to congratulate The Friends of |
| 4 |
| the Des Plaines Library on the occasion of its 50th |
| 5 |
| anniversary; and
|
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, The Friends of the Des Plaines Library was founded |
| 7 |
| in April of 1954 by a planning committee of the American |
| 8 |
| Association of University Women, Northwest Suburban Branch, |
| 9 |
| and the parent organizations of the local schools; since its |
| 10 |
| inception, there have been only 14 different presidents; the |
| 11 |
| group has been active in each move of the Des Plaines Library |
| 12 |
| to bigger buildings; the last move was in 2000; and
|
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, When The Friends of the Des Plaines Library |
| 14 |
| originated, the purpose of the organization was to stimulate |
| 15 |
| public interest in the library and collect data on the history |
| 16 |
| of the town; today, the group provides ancillary financial |
| 17 |
| support for the library for items deemed desirable and not |
| 18 |
| normally available through conventional budgetary provisions; |
| 19 |
| fund raising by the group consists of semiannual book sales, |
| 20 |
| with the proceeds used to support programs and purchase items |
| 21 |
| for the Library; and
|
| 22 |
| WHEREAS, Originally, membership fees were $1 for adults and |
| 23 |
| 25 cents for children through high school; the current |
| 24 |
| membership has 4 designations: Friend, Family, Good Friend, and |
| 25 |
| Benefactor; the single membership is only $5 per year; current |
| 26 |
| membership in all designations is approximately 600; and
|
| 27 |
| WHEREAS, In 1957, The Friends were involved with the |
| 28 |
| Library's 50th anniversary; the group collected a large file on |
| 29 |
| the history of Des Plaines from 1833, including photographs, |
| 30 |
| family histories, and information on industrial development; |
| 31 |
| in recent years, the Des Plaines Historical Society has taken |
