HOUSE RESOLUTION


 
2
    WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the 
3
State of Illinois are pleased to congratulate Mrs. Elizabeth 
4
Thomas on the occasion of her retirement after 38 years in 
5
education; and
 

6
    WHEREAS, Mrs. Thomas earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 
7
Elementary Education from Southern Illinois University at 
8
Edwardsville and a Masters of Education degree from the 
9
University of Missouri-St. Louis; in addition, she holds 
10
administrative certificates in Missouri and Illinois; and
 

11
    WHEREAS, Mrs. Thomas is currently a fourth grade teacher at 
12
McHenry Elementary School and will retire at the end of the 
13
2003-2004 school year; her career began in 1966 at Park 
14
Elementary School, where she taught third and fourth grades; in 
15
1980, she was assigned to the newly constructed McHenry School, 
16
where she continued her fourth grade teaching duties as well as 
17
many extra activities and committees; and
 

18
    WHEREAS, In her extra duties at McHenry Elementary, Mrs. 
19
Thomas has chaired the Courtesy Committee since 1980, has been 
20
presenter at In-Service meetings and St. Clair County Teachers 
21
Institute; served on district committees to develop Student 
22
Learning Objectives and Developmental Learning Objectives; 
23
served on textbook selection committees; served on the Social 
24
Studies Curriculum Alignment Committee, with focus on History 
25
of East St. Louis; has been a judge for SIU-E Trio Science 
26
Fair; mentored student teachers; and submitted instructional 
27
ideas that were published in the Seedbed Journal of SIU-E's 
28
Teachers Center Project; and

    WHEREAS, Mrs. Thomas has been a member of the McHenry 
30
School Improvement Committee since its inception; she 
31
presented Component 2 of the School Improvement Plan to the

State Quality Review Team; she presently serves as co-chairman 
2
of the committee; and

    WHEREAS, Mrs. Thomas has received numerous awards and 
4
recognitions for her professional contributions, including the 
5
Rhodia Miller Memorial Award-Mathews Dickey Boys' Club, the 
6
Eminent Educator Award-Phi Delta Kappa, the Delta Great Teacher 
7
Award-Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and she is listed in Who's 
8
Who Among America's Teachers-1990 First Edition; and
 

9
    WHEREAS, Mrs. Thomas is an active member of New Sunny Mount 
10
Baptist Church in St. Louis, Missouri, where she has been 
11
chairman of the Board of Christian Education, and is currently 
12
serving as vice-chairman; other past and present professional 
13
and civic memberships include: Delta Sigma Theta Sorority-past 
14
president St. Louis Alumnae; Top Ladies of Distinction-St. 
15
Louis Chapter-Assistant Recording Secretary; International 
16
Training in Communication; the National Council of Teachers of 
17
Mathematics; the International Reading Association; and the 
18
Greater St. Louis English Teachers Association; therefore, be 
19

    RESOLVED, BY THE  HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
21
NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
22
congratulate Mrs. Elizabeth Thomas on the occasion of her 
23
retirement after 38 years as an educator, and we thank her for 
24
her many years of dedicated service to her students; and be it 
25
further

    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
27
presented to Mrs. Elizabeth Thomas as an expression of our 
28
respect and esteem.
