| WHEREAS, Some 28 million school lunches are served up each |
| 3 |
| weekday across the country; and
|
| 4 |
| WHEREAS, Since 1990, more than 5,000 students and workers |
| 5 |
| have gotten sick from eating what has been served in their |
| 6 |
| lunchrooms; and
|
| 7 |
| WHEREAS, There are growing questions about food safety in |
| 8 |
| our nation's school cafeterias; and
|
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, Health violations have included rats, mice, and |
| 10 |
| roaches in cafeterias, meat not cooked at the right |
| 11 |
| temperatures, foods not kept at the right temperatures on the |
| 12 |
| food service lines, the presence of toxic materials, like those |
| 13 |
| used for cleaning that are not labeled and property stored, |
| 14 |
| cafeteria workers not washing their hands, cafeteria workers |
| 15 |
| with illnesses working on the serving lines, unclean food |
| 16 |
| preparation area, utensils and equipments, and food |
| 17 |
| unprotected from cross-contamination; and
|
| 18 |
| WHEREAS, The Chicago Tribune has previously reported on |
| 19 |
| problems in several Chicago schools; and
|
| 20 |
| WHEREAS, NBC News has recently reported similar health |
| 21 |
| problems in other school districts located in St. Louis, New |
| 22 |
| York City, Washington D.C., Nashville, and San Diego; and |
| 23 |
| WHEREAS, Last year in response to this school health |
| 24 |
| crisis, United States Senator Richard Durbin of Illinois |
| 25 |
| introduced the Safe School Food Act into the United States |
| 26 |
| Senate; and |
| 27 |
| WHEREAS, The Safe School Food Act calls for better training |
| 28 |
| of cafeteria workers and higher standards for those who supply |
