| WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the |
3 |
| State of Illinois learned with regret of the death of their |
4 |
| former colleague State Representative William D. Walsh of Oak |
5 |
| Brook on August 3, 2003; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, William D. Walsh was born in Chicago on February |
7 |
| 5, 1924; he valiantly served his country in the U.S. Navy |
8 |
| during World War II; and
|
9 |
| WHEREAS, Representative Walsh married the former Barbara |
10 |
| Kennedy in 1948; he received a B.S. in Business Administration |
11 |
| from Loyola University in Chicago in 1948; and
|
12 |
| WHEREAS, Prior to his service in the legislature, Mr. Walsh |
13 |
| worked as a sales representative for Burroughs Corporation |
14 |
| (Unisys) in Chicago and as vice president of Alpine Plastic Bag |
15 |
| in Chicago; he was a long-time partner in P.M. Walsh & Company |
16 |
| in Oak Brook Terrace; in 1959, he was elected to the Memorial |
17 |
| Park District Board of Commissioners; and
|
18 |
| WHEREAS, Representative Walsh was elected for 10 terms to |
19 |
| the Illinois House of Representatives and served from 1961 to |
20 |
| 1981; during that time he filled many roles including Assistant |
21 |
| Minority Leader, Assistant Majority Leader, and House Majority |
22 |
| Leader; and
|
23 |
| WHEREAS, Representative Walsh was known for his integrity |
24 |
| and his knowledge of parliamentary procedure; he was a |
25 |
| proponent of community-based treatment for the mentally ill; he |
26 |
| played a leading role in the passage of the Regional |
27 |
| Transportation Authority, the oversight board for regional |
28 |
| mass transit; he also sponsored legislation that made community |
29 |
| colleges an integral part of the State's education system; he |
30 |
| was named "Most Respected Legislator" in the Chicago Tribune |
