HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to recognize Donald M. Badgley on the occasion of his retirement on June 30, 2004, after 32 years at Steeleville and 38 years in education; he will retire as Superintendent of Steeleville Community Unit School District #138; and

WHEREAS, Donald M. Badgley grew up in Grand Chain, Illinois, where he attended elementary school and then graduated from high school in 1962; after graduation, he enrolled at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky, and earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Math and Physical Education in the summer of 1966; and

WHEREAS, Don's teaching career began in 1966 in Dongola where he was assigned to teach high school math; he also served as the junior high basketball and baseball coach for 4 years, high school assistant basketball coach for 2 years, and head varsity basketball coach for 2 years; and

WHEREAS, During his tenure at Dongola, Don pursued his education and in 1970 earned a Master's Degree from Southeast Missouri State University in Education Administration and Supervision; his career in administration began in 1972 at Steeleville High School, where he served as principal until 1977 at which time he became the second superintendent in Steeleville Community Unit Schools District's history; still pursuing his education, he earned his Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Education Administration in 1992 at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale; and

WHEREAS, In 1967, Don married Mary Ann Craig from Karnak, Illinois; the two had known each other through mutual friends since high school, but did not begin dating until Don began teaching in Dongola; they have two children: Wendy, who is married to Barry Graskewicz, and Matt, who is married to Tracy Holscher; the apples of his eye are his three granddaughters, Bailey, Riley, and Abby; and

WHEREAS, Steeleville has been home to Don and his family for 32 years; his involvement in the Steeleville School District has been more than just a job to Don; he has supported the students and the community of Steeleville as has been evident in his participation at a majority of the school district's athletic events and organizational functions; he started the school's golf team in 1994 and has coached the team since it began; his continued commitment to education, to the students, and to the district has been a major contribution to the success of the Steeleville School District; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Donald M. Badgley on his retirement after many years of dedication to the education profession; and we wish him good health and happiness in all his future endeavors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Donald M. Badgley as a token of our respect and esteem.
