| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives were |
3 |
| saddened to learn of the death of Georgie "Gigi" Nicks of |
4 |
| Maywood on August 19, 2004; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, Ms. Nicks, who was diagnosed with HIV in 1990 and |
6 |
| with AIDS four years later, selflessly devoted the last 13 |
7 |
| years of her life to educating, empowering, and advocating on |
8 |
| behalf of people living with HIV/AIDS, both locally and |
9 |
| nationally; and
|
10 |
| WHEREAS, She was the Consumer Advocacy Director for the |
11 |
| CORE Center of the Cook County Bureau of Health Services; she |
12 |
| served on the boards of the Family and Children's AIDS Network |
13 |
| in Chicago, the AIDS Alliance for Children, Youth & Families, |
14 |
| and the National Women's AIDS Project in Washington, D.C.; she |
15 |
| was also Vice President of the HIV Positive Action Coalition in |
16 |
| Chicago and a member of the Illinois HIV Prevention Community |
17 |
| Planning Group, the Chicago Area Title I Planning Council, and |
18 |
| numerous other advisory and planning bodies, both locally and |
19 |
| nationally; and |
20 |
| WHEREAS, Ms. Nicks contributed to several publications |
21 |
| relating to AIDS; she was a national trainer for consumers of |
22 |
| HIV services; and she was a nationally known speaker on women's |
23 |
| health issues, especially women living with HIV/AIDS; and |
24 |
| WHEREAS, Ms. Nicks viewed her activism as a journey and not |
25 |
| as a job, because she thought the purpose of life was to be |
26 |
| useful, to be responsible, to be honorable, and to be |
27 |
| compassionate; and |
28 |
| WHEREAS, Her passing will be deeply felt by her family
and |
29 |
| friends, especially her daughter, Sophia; her son, Jabari |
30 |
| Nicks; her three sisters, Irene Gandy, Juanita Tipton, and |
