| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, Carl Sandburg High School in Orland Park |
| 3 |
| celebrated its 50th anniversary on October 10, 2004; and
|
| 4 |
| WHEREAS, Construction of the high school (the first high |
| 5 |
| school in Consolidated District 230) began in May 1953, and by |
| 6 |
| September 1954, classes were in session; the school was the |
| 7 |
| first in the nation named for the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet |
| 8 |
| and Illinois native; District 230's board chose to name the |
| 9 |
| school for Sandburg because it wanted to honor a living person |
| 10 |
| who had made an important contribution to education; and
|
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, Carl Sandburg himself attended the building's |
| 12 |
| formal dedication ceremony on October 10, 1954, speaking to |
| 13 |
| more than 2,000 people, including 525 students; the ceremony |
| 14 |
| was to last an hour, with 45 minutes allotted for Sandburg, |
| 15 |
| however, he entertained the audience for nearly two hours, |
| 16 |
| singing and playing his guitar; and
|
| 17 |
| WHEREAS, Carl Sandburg High School currently serves more |
| 18 |
| than 3,500 students; it has a staff of 235, 72 percent of which |
| 19 |
| have a master's degree or beyond; 82 percent of the Class of |
| 20 |
| 2004 are continuing their formal education by attending more |
| 21 |
| than 100 post-secondary institutions, and there have been more |
| 22 |
| than 26,000 graduates; and
|
| 23 |
| WHEREAS, Carl Sandburg High School is a recipient of the |
| 24 |
| National Excellence in Education Award; therefore, be it
|
| 25 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 26 |
| NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
| 27 |
| congratulate Carl Sandburg High School on the occasion of the |
| 28 |
| celebration of its 50th anniversary and we commend the faculty, |
| 29 |
| staff, students, and parents on achieving the National |
| 30 |
| Excellence in Education Award; and be it further
