Amend Senate Bill 372, AS AMENDED, 3 by replacing everything after the enacting clause with the 4 following: 5 "Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing 6 Sections 27-22.3 and 27-23.5 as follows: 7 (105 ILCS 5/27-22.3) (from Ch. 122, par. 27-22.3) 8 Sec. 27-22.3. Volunteer service credit program. 9 (a) A school district may establish a volunteer service 10 credit program that enables secondary school students to earn 11 credit towards graduation through performance of community 12 service. This community service may include participation in 13 the organization of a high school or community blood drive or 14 other blood donor recruitment campaign. Any program so 15 established shall begin with students entering grade 9 in the 16 1993-1994 school year or later. The amount of credit given 17 for program participation shall not exceed that given for 18 completion of one semester of language arts, math, science or 19 social studies. 20 (b) Any community service performed as part of a course 21 for which credit is given towards graduation shall not 22 qualify under a volunteer service credit program. Any -2- LRB093 04664 NHT 16325 a 1 service for which a student is paid shall not qualify under a 2 volunteer service credit program. Any community work 3 assigned as a disciplinary measure shall not qualify under a 4 volunteer service credit program. 5 (c) School districts that establish volunteer service 6 credit programs shall establish any necessary rules, 7 regulations and procedures. 8 (Source: P.A. 87-1082.) 9 (105 ILCS 5/27-23.5) 10 Sec. 27-23.5. Organ/tissue donor and transplantation 11 programs. Each school district that maintains grades 9 and 12 10 may include in its curriculum and teach to the students of 13 either such grade one unit of instruction on organ/tissue 14 donor and transplantation programs. No student shall be 15 required to take or participate in instruction on 16 organ/tissue donor and transplantation programs if a parent 17 or guardian files written objection thereto on constitutional 18 grounds, and refusal to take or participate in such 19 instruction on those grounds shall not be reason for 20 suspension or expulsion of a student or result in any 21 academic penalty. 22 The regional superintendent of schools in which a school 23 district that maintains grades 9 and 10 is located shall 24 obtain and distributemake availableto eachtheschool that 25 maintains grades 9 and 10 inboard ofthe district 26 information and data, including instructional materials 27 provided at no cost by America's Blood Centers, the American 28 Red Cross, and Gift of Hope, that may be used by the school 29districtin developing a unit of instruction under this 30 Section.
