093_SR0120 LRB093 11540 KEF 14711 r 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of 3 Illinois were saddened to learn of the death of Lt. Col. John 4 H. Stein of Valdosta, Georgia on March 23, 2003, in 5 Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom while on a 6 humanitarian mission along with five others to rescue two 7 injured children; and 8 WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Stein was born July 8, 1963, in Des 9 Moines, Iowa, to Jay and Hazel (Fick) Stein; he married 10 Barbara Nelson July 9, 1983, in Macomb; and 11 WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Stein grew up in the Macomb area and 12 moved away in 1983; he was a 1985 graduate of Rochester 13 Institute of Technology and received his master's degree from 14 the University of Maryland; and 15 WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Stein was commissioned into the United 16 States Air Force; he had flown 3,901 hours during his 17 military career; he had volunteered for the rescue mission he 18 was flying; and 19 WHEREAS, During his military career, Lt. Col. Stein 20 received a Meritorious Service Medal, an Air Medal Aerial 21 Achievement Medal, an Air Force Commendation Medal, an Army 22 Commendation Medal, and an Army Achievement Medal; and 23 WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Stein's passing will be deeply felt by 24 many, especially his wife, Barbara Nelson; his father, Jay W. 25 Stein; his mother, Hazel Henry; his two sons, Doug and Tim 26 Stein; his daughter, Erin Stein; his three sisters, Holly 27 Stein, Nevida (James McLaughlin) Stein, and April (Bryan 28 Brittain) Stein; his six nieces; and his two nephews; and 29 WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his grandparents; 30 therefore, be it -2- LRB093 11540 KEF 14711 r 1 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL 2 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of 3 Lt. Col. John H. Stein along with all who knew and loved him 4 and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, 5 and community; and be it further 6 RESOLVED, That we honor the memory of Lt. Col. John H. 7 Stein who gave his life in the service of his country; and be 8 it further 9 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 10 presented to the family of Lt. Col. John H. Stein with our 11 deepest sympathy.
