093_SR0187 SDS093 00044 LMT 00044r 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of 3 Illinois take pride in the cultural, racial, ethnic and 4 religious diversity of the people of Illinois; and 5 WHEREAS, It is always troubling to learn of events taking 6 place in Illinois that do not celebrate our diversity but 7 rather promote racism and hatred of persons with differing 8 customs, backgrounds and beliefs; and 9 WHEREAS, Such an event will take place on Saturday, May 10 31, 2003 in Berwyn, Illinois, when the Ku Klux Klan has 11 scheduled a rally to take place in a local park; and 12 WHEREAS, Berwyn has become a community of significant 13 cultural and ethnic diversity and has prospered because of 14 its diversity, with businesses that have flourished and 15 community organizations that have been developed and church 16 communities that have grown; and 17 WHEREAS, The principles embraced by the Ku Klux Klan are 18 not those that have made Berwyn, Illinois and the United 19 States good and nurturing environments for our people to 20 live, work and raise a family; therefore be it 21 22 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL 23 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, That we reject the 24 principles of racism and hatred promoted by the Ku Klux Klan 25 and applaud the religions and community organizations of 26 Berwyn that have organized a prayer service that will take 27 place at the Berwyn Presbyterian Church at 1 p.m. Saturday, 28 May 31, 2003, and encourage all members of the Berwyn 29 community to attend the prayer service in order to affirm -2- SDS093 00044 LMT 00044r 1 their commitment to the principles of tolerance and 2 diversity; and be it further 3 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this preamble and 4 resolution be presented to the organizers of the May 31 5 prayer service at the Berwyn Presbyterian Church.
