093_SR0226 LRB093 12902 KEF 18110 r 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of 3 Illinois were saddened to learn of the death of Ruth Brockway 4 of Plainfield on July 25, 2003; and 5 WHEREAS, Mrs. Brockway was born on July 30, 1901 to James 6 and Rachel Rouse of Mokena; at age 11, she moved with her 7 family to Plainfield, where her father owned a blacksmith 8 shop; and 9 WHEREAS, Mrs. Brockway married Levi Brockway in 1944 and 10 the couple opened Owens Restaurant in Plainfield; in 1956, 11 they purchased the historic Halfway House, built in 1834, 12 also known as Plainfield House; in addition, she was employed 13 at Steiners Dress Shop for nearly 35 years before retiring in 14 her early 90s; and 15 WHEREAS, Mrs. Brockway was a member of Plainfield 16 Congregational Church, the Eastern Star Pansy Chapter, the 17 Plainfield Historical Society, and the American Legion 18 Auxiliary; and 19 WHEREAS, Throughout her life, she witnessed the 20 automobile replace the horse and buggy and the dawn of radio 21 and television; through all the changes, she was most 22 impressed with how "everything is moved by the automobile"; 23 and 24 WHEREAS, Ruth Brockway's passing will be deeply felt by 25 many, especially her nephews, Ralph (Shirley) Rouse and Ray 26 (Frances) Wilmington; her nieces, Sue (Jerry) Kneubuehl and 27 JoAnn Cragher; her dear friend, Marge Gregor; and numerous 28 grand nieces and nephews; and 29 WHEREAS, Mrs. Brockway was preceded in death by her 30 husband, Levi; her brothers, George, Glenn, Ralph, and Floyd 31 Rouse; and her sister, Maude Wilmington; therefore, be it -2- LRB093 12902 KEF 18110 r 1 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL 2 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing 3 of Ruth Brockway and extend our sincere condolences to her 4 family and friends; and be it further 5 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 6 presented to the family of Ruth Brockway as an expression of 7 our deepest sympathy.
