SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with regret of the death of Charles A. James III of
4 Wood River on Sunday, August 22, 2004; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mr. James was born on July 2, 1921 in Rochester,
6 New York to Charles A. and Hazel (Chapman) James Jr.; on April
7 16, 1946, he married the former Jeannette Guionnaux; she
8 preceded him in death on April 19, 2002; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Mr. James valiantly served his country for 23
10 years as a member of the U.S. Army; he retired in 1966 and then
11 worked as a purchasing agent for 18 years at Southern Illinois
12 University Edwardsville, retiring in 1983; he was a decorated
13 veteran of World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Mr. Wood was an organizing member of the Wood
15 River Heritage Council, which was created to help showcase the
16 Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Celebration; he was president and
17 coordinator of the Camp DuBois Rendezvous in Wood River and
18 helped bring in more than $70,000 for the Wood River Museum and
19 Camp DuBois; he was the past president of the General Rogers
20 Clark Chapter, ILSSAR, and served as chairman of the
21 outstanding citizen committee; he was a member of the Kyoto
22 Masonic Lodge 5 of Japan and the Sojourners of Paris, France; a
23 member of the Illinois Society Sons of the American Revolution,
24 he served on the board of managers and as chairman of the flag
25 committee and historic sites committee; and
 
26     WHEREAS, Mr. Wood was a member of the First Church of
27 Christ Scientist in Granite City and was also a member of the
28 Dumont, New Jersey Boy Scouts of America and had earned the
29 rank of Eagle Scout; in his earlier years, he worked at Clemson
30 University and was managing editor of the Agrarian; he was a
31 member of Alpha Zeta, honorary agriculture fraternity,

1 president of the dairy club, and member of Alpha Phi Omega,
2 service fraternity; while at SIUE, he was a member of Gamma
3 Theta Upsilon; and
 
4     WHEREAS, The passing of Charles A. James III has been
5 deeply felt by many, especially his daughters, Dianne H.M. Lipe
6 and husband Larry, Linda J. Hanselman and husband Jeff, and
7 Candace Sauermann and husband Frank; his stepdaughter, Rolande
8 Cantrell and husband Bill; his six grandchildren; his four
9 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Viola White; therefore,
10 be it
 
11     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
12 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
13 Charles A. James III, who is remembered as an extremely kind
14 and generous man committed to history; and be it further
 
15     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16 presented to the family of Mr. James as an expression of our
17 deepest sympathy.
