SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, We have learned with sadness that Mr. Joseph
3 Raymond "Ray" Hanahan of Godfrey passed away on September 19,
4 2004; and
 
5     WHEREAS, He was born in Alton on May 8, 1919, the son of
6 Harry and Nettie (Klinger) Hanahan, and graduated from
7 Marquette Catholic High School in 1936; and
 
8     WHEREAS, He married Maxine "Put" Putnam in St. Louis,
9 Missouri on June 11, 1949; she preceded him in death in 1995;
10 he later married Dolores "Dee" Cusack in Peoria, Illinois on
11 July 23, 1999; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Mr. Hanahan served his country during World War II
13 as a navigator in the U.S. Army Air Force; after the war, he
14 received a degree in in chemical engineering from Washington
15 University in St. Louis; he had a distinguished 32-year career
16 at Shell Oil in Wood River, retiring in 1981 as head process
17 and project engineer of the Wood River Refinery; and
 
18     WHEREAS, He was dedicated to his community; he was a member
19 of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton and was active in the
20 East End Improvement Association, an active Marquette alumnus,
21 a past board member of the former St. Patrick's Catholic Church
22 and School in Alton, the Mississippi Valley Garden Club,
23 Veterans of Foreign Wars Alton Post 1308, Wood Carvers Club,
24 Senior Services Plus, Oasis, Shell Oil Retirees breakfast group
25 and the Ancient Order of the Hibernians, a 62-year member of
26 the Knights of Columbus Alton Council 460 and a fourth-degree
27 member of Pere Marquette Assembly 0203 of the Knights of
28 Columbus; and
 
29     WHEREAS, He will be remembered as a man of faith who was
30 dedicated to his family and friends, an avid fisherman, and an

1 accomplished artist and craftsman; and
 
2     WHEREAS, The death of Mr. Hanahan is a great loss to his
3 family and friends, especially his wife, Dolores; his son and
4 daughter-in-law, Joe and Mary Hanahan; his daughter, Mary
5 Pulford; his grandchildren, Mangan Pulford, Joe Pulford, Mike
6 Hanahan, and Sara Hanahan; and his large extended family and
7 many friends; therefore, be it
 
8     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
9 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we express our profound
10 sorrow at the death of Joseph Raymond "Ray" Hanahan, that we
11 offer our heartfelt sympathy to his family, and that we join
12 his many friends in honoring his memory; and be it further
 
13     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14 presented to the family of Mr. Hanahan with our sincere
15 condolences.
