1     AN ACT concerning safety.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 1. Short title. This Act may be cited as the
5 Children's Environmental Health Officer Act.
 
6     Section 5. Children's Environmental Health Officer.
7 Subject to specific appropriations for this purpose, the
8 Illinois Department of Public Health shall create and maintain
9 within the Office of Health Protection the Children's
10 Environmental Health Officer. The Officer shall:
11         (1) serve as the chief advisor to the Director of
12     Public Health on matters within the jurisdiction of the
13     Department relating to environmental health and
14     environmental protection concerning children;
15         (2) assist the boards, departments, and other offices
16     within the Department in assessing the effectiveness of
17     statutes, rules, and programs designed to protect children
18     from environmental hazards;
19         (3) coordinate, within the Department and with other
20     State agencies, especially the Environmental Protection
21     Agency, regulatory efforts, research and data collection,
22     and other programs and services that impact the
23     environmental health of children, and coordinate with
24     appropriate federal agencies conducting related regulatory
25     efforts and research and data collection; and
26         (4) lead and coordinate these efforts among the various
27     Department Offices and programs, as well as among other
28     State agencies.
 
29     Section 10. Reports. On and after January 1, 2007, and
30 biannually thereafter, the Children's Environmental Health
31 Officer shall report to the General Assembly and the Governor

1 concerning his or her activities. The report shall include, but
2 not be limited to, information on progress made by programs
3 within the Department to address children's environmental
4 health issues.
