| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, On Monday, September 22, 1957, nine African |
| 3 |
| American students arrived at Central High School in Little |
| 4 |
| Rock, Arkansas, looking forward to an education; Mr. Ernest |
| 5 |
| Green, presently the managing director, Lehman Brothers, |
| 6 |
| Washington, D.C., was one of those students; and
|
| 7 |
| WHEREAS, Those students were the first to integrate Central |
| 8 |
| High School following the 1954 U.S. Supreme Court decision in |
| 9 |
| Brown vs. Board of Education that declared segregation illegal; |
| 10 |
| Mr. Green and his fellow students were determined to get an |
| 11 |
| education no matter what obstacles or discriminatory practices |
| 12 |
| were placed in front of them; Mr. Green and the other students |
| 13 |
| courageously faced adversity and received their education, |
| 14 |
| paving the way for equality in education for all students; and
|
| 15 |
| WHEREAS, The month of February is Black History Month and |
| 16 |
| Rich Township is celebrating the month with a program featuring |
| 17 |
| Mr. Green as a speaker on Thursday, February 10, 2005; |
| 18 |
| therefore, be it
|

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 20 |
| NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 21 |
| we honor Ernest Green for his role as a member of the "Little |
| 22 |
| Rock Nine" and for having the courage to face adversity in |
| 23 |
| order to receive an education; and be it further
|
| 24 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 25 |
| presented to Mr. Green as an expression of our respect and |
| 26 |
| esteem.
