| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the |
| 3 |
| State of Illinois urge the President of the United States to |
| 4 |
| reinstate full funding for Amtrak; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, President Bush's recently proposed budget cuts |
| 6 |
| all funding for Amtrak; and
|
| 7 |
| WHEREAS, Amtrak was created by Congress in 1970 to take |
| 8 |
| over the passenger rail service previously operated by private |
| 9 |
| freight railroad companies in the United States; and
|
| 10 |
| WHEREAS, During the period from Amtrak's inception through |
| 11 |
| 2003, the federal government has spent $1.89 trillion on air |
| 12 |
| and highway modes while Amtrak has received just over $30 |
| 13 |
| billion in federal subsidies; and
|
| 14 |
| WHEREAS, Amtrak serves 500 stations in 46 states on 22,000 |
| 15 |
| miles of track; and
|
| 16 |
| WHEREAS, Amtrak has 20,000 employees; and
|
| 17 |
| WHEREAS, Amtrak carries over 25 million passengers a year; |
| 18 |
| and
|
| 19 |
| WHEREAS, Illinois is home to several of the highest volume |
| 20 |
| Amtrak lines; and
|
| 21 |
| WHEREAS, Illinois' stations are in Alton, |
| 22 |
| Bloomington/Normal, Carbondale, Chicago, Effingham, Joliet, |
| 23 |
| Mattoon, Naperville, Springfield, and several other cities; |
