| WHEREAS, Jeremiah J. O'Connor, International |
| 3 |
| Secretary-Treasurer of the
International Brotherhood of |
| 4 |
| Electrical Workers (IBEW), is retiring; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Secretary-Treasurer O'Connor has served at |
| 6 |
| virtually every role in the IBEW; he was appointed |
| 7 |
| International Secretary-Treasurer in January 2001 and elected |
| 8 |
| to that position the following September at the 36th IBEW |
| 9 |
| International Convention in San Francisco, California; and
|
| 10 |
| WHEREAS, He has provided steady leadership during a |
| 11 |
| tumultuous time in the union's development and has faced the |
| 12 |
| difficult task of balancing priorities for the union in a time |
| 13 |
| of industry deregulation, plant shutdowns, global economic |
| 14 |
| upheaval, and a hostile political environment; and
|
| 15 |
| WHEREAS, Initiated as an apprentice into Lisle Local 701 in |
| 16 |
| 1959, he served as a journeyman wireman, foreman, and general |
| 17 |
| foreman; and
|
| 18 |
| WHEREAS, He combined his leadership in the field with |
| 19 |
| service on several Local 701 committees; he extended the |
| 20 |
| local's influence as a leader of the DuPage County labor and |
| 21 |
| trade councils; appointed assistant business manager of Local |
| 22 |
| 701 in 1965, he served in that capacity until 1978, when he was |
| 23 |
| elected Business Manager-Financial Secretary; and
|
| 24 |
| WHEREAS, In 1987, President J.J. Barry appointed |
| 25 |
| Secretary-Treasurer O'Connor to the position of International |
| 26 |
| Representative for the Sixth District; he gained a thorough |
| 27 |
| knowledge of the broad membership reach of the IBEW as he |
| 28 |
| represented members in construction, utility, manufacturing, |
| 29 |
| and radio-TV broadcasting local unions throughout the Sixth |
| 30 |
| District; and
|
