| WHEREAS, The Mt. Vernon Register-News won a General |
| 3 |
| Excellence award in the Southern Illinois Editorial |
| 4 |
| Association's 2005 Better Newspaper Contest; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, The Mt. Vernon newspaper took top honors in the |
| 6 |
| small-daily division for papers with a circulation of less than |
| 7 |
| 25,000, as well as in the Best Local News Coverage, Best |
| 8 |
| Editorial Page, and Advertising Excellence categories; and
|
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, The competition also features eight open |
| 10 |
| categories, and the Register-News placed in two of them; in the |
| 11 |
| Best Feature Story open category, sports writer Walter Grable |
| 12 |
| tied for first place for his story "1954's Best Team", about |
| 13 |
| Mt. Vernon Township High School's State champion boys |
| 14 |
| basketball team; Managing Editor Jeremy Hall took third place |
| 15 |
| in the Charlie Feirich Original Column open category for his |
| 16 |
| column "A blemish on this county's reputation", which was about |
| 17 |
| problems which an African-American sports writer, Mr. Grable, |
| 18 |
| was having in connection with some of the people about whom he |
| 19 |
| was reporting; and
|
| 20 |
| WHEREAS, The Mt. Vernon newspaper took second place among |
| 21 |
| small dailies for Best Use of Photography and Newspaper Design |
| 22 |
| and honorable mention for Best Local Sports Coverage; about 100 |
| 23 |
| member newspapers belong to the more than 100-year-old SIEA; |
| 24 |
| therefore, be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |

| NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 27 |
| we congratulate the staff of the Mt. Vernon Register-News on |
| 28 |
| winning several awards in the Southern Illinois Editorial |
| 29 |
| Association's 2005 Better Newspaper Contest; and be it further
