HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Abhi Gulati is one of 20 students named to the 2005 All-USA High School Academic First Team, USA TODAY's recognition program for outstanding high school students; each receives a trophy and a $2,500 cash award; and

WHEREAS, The 20 students were selected from more than 1,600 nominees nationwide as representatives of all outstanding students; judges considered academics, leadership, and most importantly, how students have extended their intellectual abilities beyond the classroom; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Gulati was born in 1986 in Chennai, India, to Rakesh and Radha Gulati; his family moved to the United States the following year, and he spent most of his childhood in Bloomington; he attended University High School in Normal his freshman year, and then decided to apply to the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) in Aurora for the opportunities it would give him to pursue his interests in math and science; and

WHEREAS, At IMSA, he has been involved in Student Council, head of the Council's Academic Committee, and a member of varsity teams for soccer, tennis, and cross-country; through IMSA's mentorship program, he worked with University of Chicago professor Laszlo Babai on a research project in pure math; next year he will attend the California Institute of Technology and major in math; and

WHEREAS, His awards and achievements include Siemens-Westinghouse Research Competition Semifinalist, Intel Science Talent Search Finalist, USA Today All-USA Academic 3rd Team, three-time Qualifier for USA Math Olympiad, attendee at Clay Research Academy (run by Clay Math Institute), multiple first-place finishes at ICTM State Math Contest, and he received a perfect score of 1600 on SAT; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Abhi Gulati on being named to USA TODAY'S 2005 All-USA High School Academic First Team; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Abhi Gulati as an expression of our respect and admiration and with best wishes for a successful future.
