| WHEREAS, The Mount Greenwood Civic Association has chosen |
| 3 |
| Chicago Firefighter Tom Taff as the 2005 Man of the Year for |
| 4 |
| his continued dedication to the successful Bucks for Burn Camp |
| 5 |
| fundraisers; and
|
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, Tom has bravely and loyally served the City of |
| 7 |
| Chicago as a firefighter for 15 years; and
|
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, After suffering second and third degree burns in a |
| 9 |
| fire 14 years ago, Tom became inspired by the brave, young |
| 10 |
| children who were burn victims at the hospital with him; and
|
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, With the young survivors in mind, Tom became very |
| 12 |
| involved in the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance (IFSA), a |
| 13 |
| non-profit organization that hosts camps for child burn |
| 14 |
| survivors between the ages of 8 and 16; and
|
| 15 |
| WHEREAS, Determined to ensure that every child who has |
| 16 |
| survived a severe burning would have the opportunity to enjoy |
| 17 |
| these camps, Tom hosted the first annual Bucks for Burn Camp 8 |
| 18 |
| years ago; and
|
| 19 |
| WHEREAS, Every year since, the fundraisers have grown in |
| 20 |
| size, and Tom was able to involve his entire community, fellow |
| 21 |
| firefighters, and hundred of volunteers to the cause; and
|
| 22 |
| WHEREAS, In just 7 years, Tom has been able to raise over |
| 23 |
| $400,000, and as many as 1,500 people attended last year's |
| 24 |
| event alone; and
|
| 25 |
| WHEREAS, In addition to his work with Bucks for Burn Camp, |
| 26 |
| Tom has helped to raise money for important causes such as the |
| 27 |
| United As One Benefit for New York Police and Fire Widows' and |
| 28 |
| Children and for Diabetes; and
