HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the State of Illinois learned with sadness of the death of James E. Redden of Marion on Thursday, September 8, 2005; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Redden was born on January 11, 1932, in West Frankfort to Hugh F. and Thelma (Frazier) Redden; he married Rosemary Gothard on January 16, 1953, in Herrin, and together they shared more than 52 years of marriage; and

WHEREAS, He graduated from McKendree College in Lebanon in 1953, where he played football, ran track, and was manager for the basketball team; he valiantly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Korean War; and

WHEREAS, Following his military service, Mr. Redden taught and coached at Cairo and Eldorado high schools; he was program manager for Universal Match Corp, vice president of Central Technology, Inc. of Herrin, retired after 20 years as vice president with Olin Corporation in Marion and East Alton, and executive vice president of Valentec International Corp in St. Louis; he also taught business management courses at Southern Illinois University and John A. Logan College; and

WHEREAS, He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Marion Rotary Club, and the Williamson County Airport Authority Board; he was an organizer and director of South Pointe Bank, a precinct committeeman for the Republican Party, and a 32nd degree Mason of Marion Lodge 89 A.F. and A.M., Valley of Southern Illinois; he served as past president of the Marion Wildcats Booster Club and the Marion Chamber of Commerce, receiving the Marion Man of the Year award from the Chamber in 1976; he was a past president of Marion Youth Baseball and Softball, a past chairman of the Williamson County Red Cross and the Williamson County Housing Authority, and a past trustee of John A. Logan College; he had served as a member of the John A. Logan College Foundation Board, the Southern Illinois University School of Business Advisory Board, the Southern Illinois Foundation Board, the Marion Civic Center Board, the Southern Illinois Inc. Board, and the Methodist Children Home (Mount Vernon) Board; he was an avid golfer at West Frankfort Golf Club; and

WHEREAS, The passing of James E. Redden has been deeply felt by many, especially his wife, Rosemary; his daughter, Jamie Powell and husband, Nick; his sons, Don G. Redden and wife, Lynne, and Terry D. Redden and wife, Debbie; his grandchildren, Autumn Redden, Brittany Powell, James Douglas Redden, and Brett Powell; his great-granddaughter, Summer Combs; his brother, Bill Redden and wife, Donna; his sisters, Marge Carter and husband, Sam, Janet LeFeber, and Betty Pasternak and husband, Frank; his sister-in-law, Betty Redden; and several nieces and nephews; he was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Hugh Redden; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of James E. Redden, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to his family as an expression of our sincerest condolences.
