| WHEREAS, Named for the native elk that once roamed the |
| 3 |
| northern Illinois forests and grasslands, Elk Grove was |
| 4 |
| initially settled in 1834 by pioneer New England farmers, |
| 5 |
| followed by German-immigrant farmers in 1848; and
|
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, In the 1950s Centex Corporation chose Elk Grove |
| 7 |
| Village as its site for a planned community because of its |
| 8 |
| proximity to rail, major highways, and the new air facilities; |
| 9 |
| Elk Grove Village was incorporated in 1956 following the |
| 10 |
| acquisition of 1,500 continuous acres of land to build |
| 11 |
| residential and industrial sections; and
|
| 12 |
| WHEREAS, Under the comprehensive plan, the Village was |
| 13 |
| divided in half, with residential development to the west and a |
| 14 |
| business park on the east, bordering the airport; and
|
| 15 |
| WHEREAS, Today, those 1,500 acres have increased to almost |
| 16 |
| 6,000 through more than 150 annexations; the community of 116 |
| 17 |
| original residents is now home to nearly 35,000 people who have |
| 18 |
| come to appreciate the exceptional services provided to |
| 19 |
| residents; and
|
| 20 |
| WHEREAS, Elk Grove Village was listed in a recently |
| 21 |
| published book, "Fifty Fabulous Places to Raise Your Family" |
| 22 |
| where it was cited for its excellent parks and recreation, |
| 23 |
| schools, access to transportation, varied housing choices, |
| 24 |
| vibrant economy, low crime rate, first-rate community |
| 25 |
| services, and small town atmosphere; and
|
| 26 |
| WHEREAS, In addition to Elk Grove's premier residential |
| 27 |
| community, it is also a booming business community; the five |
| 28 |
| square mile Elk Grove Village Business Park contains the second |
| 29 |
| largest concentration of employment in the State of Illinois; |
| 30 |
| because of the nearly $20 million in revenue collected yearly |
