| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 |
| Representatives wish to express their sincere condolences to |
| 4 |
| the family and friends of Emmett Ellsworth Kirby of Champaign, |
| 5 |
| who passed away on January 21, 2006; and
|
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Kirby was born on December 22, 1914, to |
| 7 |
| William Ellsworth and Minnie Price Kirby; on October 6, 1957, |
| 8 |
| he married Evelyn Dixon; and
|
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, Emmett Kirby was raised on a farm in McLean County |
| 10 |
| and did handy work on tractors, cars, mowers, radios, plumbing, |
| 11 |
| and electricity; he graduated from Urbana High School in 1933 |
| 12 |
| and went to work at the Rock Island Arsenal during World War II |
| 13 |
| building recoil mechanisms for cannons; he later worked at the |
| 14 |
| civil engineering machine shop at Talbott Hall at the |
| 15 |
| University of Illinois, retiring in 1976; and
|
| 16 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Kirby cast his first vote in 1936; a historian |
| 17 |
| of Champaign, Ford, and McLean counties, he traced his family |
| 18 |
| tradition of voting in the area to its pioneer beginnings, when |
| 19 |
| Joshua Trickel served as an election judge in 1832; and
|
| 20 |
| WHEREAS, Emmett Kirby was known for his knowledge, wit, and |
| 21 |
| his devotion to the Republican party; he was fond of making toy |
| 22 |
| donkeys and other joking references to the Democrats and giving |
| 23 |
| them out to his GOP pals; he frequently wrote letters to the |
| 24 |
| editor that appeared in the News-Gazette and would pop up |
| 25 |
| regularly in election stories; and
|
| 26 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Kirby was also fond of traveling; he traveled |
| 27 |
| extensively in Ireland and England; and |
| 28 |
| WHEREAS, Emmett Kirby was preceded in death by his brother; |
| 29 |
