| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives are |
| 3 |
| pleased to congratulate U.S. Army Captain Lorenzo Smith III of |
| 4 |
| Kankakee on being part of the U.S. Olympic bobsled team that |
| 5 |
| placed sixth at the XX Winter Olympiad in Torino, Italy; while |
| 6 |
| participating in the Olympics, he kept in touch with his |
| 7 |
| hometown of Kankakee through a diary link on the internet with |
| 8 |
| Noel LeVasseur school; and
|
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, He has been competing in the bobsled event since |
| 10 |
| 2002 and served as a pusher on team USA-2 at the Olympics; he |
| 11 |
| was an integral part of the U.S. team during the 2004-05 season |
| 12 |
| when he raced with talented veterans Mike Kohn, Steve Holcomb, |
| 13 |
| and Todd Hayes; his best result during that "breakout" campaign |
| 14 |
| was a fourth-place finish he helped secure in Lake Placid, New |
| 15 |
| York, with Mr. Holcomb, Ben Fogel, and Jason Ross; and
|
| 16 |
| WHEREAS, Captain Smith is an air defense artillery officer |
| 17 |
| and a member of the U.S. Army World Class Athlete program; he |
| 18 |
| entered the Army on May 27, 2000, and completed his officer |
| 19 |
| basic course in February 2001; he served in Korea as a tactical |
| 20 |
| control officer and at Fort Carson as an assistant operations |
| 21 |
| officer prior to his assignment to the Army World Class Athlete |
| 22 |
| program; and
|
| 23 |
| WHEREAS, He attended Kankakee High School in Kankakee and |
| 24 |
| holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Management |
| 25 |
| from the United States Military Academy in West Point, New |
| 26 |
| York; and
|
| 27 |
| WHEREAS, At the United States Military Academy in West |
| 28 |
| Point, New York, he was a two-time Patriot League champion in |
| 29 |
| the sprinting events while a member of the Black Knights' track |
| 30 |
| and field team; his name still appears on three of the Army's |
| 31 |
| all-time Top 10 lists, including the 60-meter and 100-meter |
