| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, Hopedale is a village rich in tradition and |
| 3 |
| noteworthy historical events; and
|
| 4 |
| WHEREAS, Hopedale was founded in 1827 by the Aaron |
| 5 |
| Orendorff family; the town's original name was Osceola; after |
| 6 |
| an application was sent to the Postmaster General, it was |
| 7 |
| discovered that Osceola was in use by another town, so it was |
| 8 |
| renamed Hopedale, after the township; and
|
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, The first daily vacation Bible School in the world |
| 10 |
| was started in Hopedale by Mrs. Mattie Pritchard Miles, wife of |
| 11 |
| the Hopedale Methodist minister, Rev D.T. Miles; she organized |
| 12 |
| and conducted the classes with 37 children attending; and
|
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, At the turn of the century, Hopedale had a brick |
| 14 |
| factory, two doctors, a drug store, an opera house, |
| 15 |
| restaurants, and the railroad; and
|
| 16 |
| WHEREAS, Around 1920, Buick cars and John Deere farm |
| 17 |
| tractors were being sold in Hopedale; the village had the usual |
| 18 |
| boarding house and dry goods store; over the years many |
| 19 |
| business have come and gone; in 1954, the Hopedale Hospital was |
| 20 |
| constructed, financed by local investors; since then a nursing |
| 21 |
| home, retirement facility, and wellness center have been added; |
| 22 |
| and
|
| 23 |
| WHEREAS, Around 1906, an Independence Day Celebration was |
| 24 |
| held on the Fourth of July as in many over communities; |
| 25 |
| uniquely, Hopedale's celebration has continued annually to the |
| 26 |
| present day and includes a yearly barbeque cook-off; therefore, |
